I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with years of experience helping Individuals, couples, and families find healing and freedom in Jesus and form healthier relationships. I believe that through a greater awareness of our past and its effects, taking personal responsibility for our choices and forming a closer relationship with God, we can experience the life God intends for us. I offer encouragement, tools and insight so you can grow in your relationships and in your true self in Christ.

Kent – Tue & Thu
Bellevue – Mon, Fri & Sat

I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist working for Seattle Christian Counseling in Bellevue and Kent. I have a passion for empowering others to experience freedom, wholeness, and love, and for helping couples, families, and communities to strengthen relational bonds. Healing is not an end in itself, but a means to know God and to become who we are meant to be as individuals and in relationship with others. I am excited to accompany you on this journey as you discover more about yourself, your relationships, and God.

My Goal as a Christian Counselor

I strive to foster a caring, open environment in which you will feel comfortable to explore your deepest thoughts, concerns, and hopes. As your counselor, I seek to make you feel understood and valued for who you are. Above everything else, I desire to see life and healing and redemption in your life. My goal is to provide the professional insight, relationship and life coaching, and emotional support that will nurture such healing and redemption.

What I Offer As A Christian Counselor

I offer support as both a pastor and a counselor, which means that I can draw on both of these vocations to provide you with the tools and resources to overcome personal or relational obstacles. Using my professional insight, I can offer you a listening ear, objective counsel, and a positive relationship in the collaborative dynamic between client and counselor. I believe that psychotherapy is an opportunity to discern how God is working in our lives, and I will accompany you as you seek to understand the healing that the Lord is already effecting within you.

My Counseling Approach: What to Expect in Therapy

My counseling methods closely resemble life coaching: for me, being a counselor is all about providing the insight, tools, and encouragement that enables others to grow and change in positive ways. We will discern your goals for therapy, and in our first few sessions, I want to listen to your story so that you feel understood. As I get to know more about you and your needs, I will provide interpretations, resources, and encouragement for enacting change. My counseling approach is highly relational, and our work will be collaborative; I will also, when appropriate, encourage the inclusion of your loved ones and/or others within your supportive community in sessions to join us as you work toward healing and wholeness.

On a Personal Note

I am personally familiar with many of the issues my clients face, including the grief which results from the loss of a child, the angst of marital crisis, and the disappointment of professional set-backs. The Lord has brought me healing, reconciliation, freedom and growth through community, mentors, friends, prayers, and psychotherapy. My passion for Christian counseling arises from my own experience of healing in therapy, and my conviction that God can always do more than we can ask or imagine.

Qualifications & Experience

I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Washington, and I hold two advanced degrees from Fuller Theological Seminary: a Masters of Divinity in Marriage and Family, and a Master of Arts in Spiritual Formation and Discipleship. Both as a pastor and as a licensed marriage and family therapist, I have counseled people for over three decades, at times working simultaneously in senior ministry roles and counseling practice. My wife and I have co-led marriage and family enrichment courses to church leaders and couples in the United States and Asia. From these myriad experiences, I have had the privilege to help people of all ages, backgrounds, and circumstances to overcome barriers to health and well-being.

My Call to Christian Counseling

My call to counseling has emerged hand-in-hand with my work as a pastor. Throughout my life I have felt compelled by God to help people experience freedom, purpose, and strong relationships. From my early years of pastoral ministry I came to value the integration of biblical truth, social sciences and Christian spirituality. After a number of years in ministry, I was licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in 1993, and have seen my two careers complement one another well. My passion is to see people come alive, experience healing, and find community in their journey of faith.

More About Me

There is nothing more enjoyable to me than spending time with my wife and two adult children. In my free time, I play tennis and basketball, and enjoy listening to music as well as playing piano and guitar. Christian counseling and spiritual formation have played a crucial part of my own life journey, and I feel utterly blessed to accompany others on their journey to personal and relational transformation.

Grief and Loss

Grief and loss are realities of life that most of us will have to face at some point in life. It can be triggered by loss, transition, or any other instability. Healthy grieving means acknowledging and expressing your pain in a safe environment, so that you can begin to move beyond your grief and resume normal functioning. As a grief counselor, I can help you identify and verbally express your pain, act as a witness to your loss, and discuss healthy ways to cope with loss, such as forging supportive connections with others.

Couples Counseling

As a marriage and family specialist, I am passionate about helping loved ones learn to communicate lovingly and honestly to build intimacy. In couples counseling, I act as an objective facilitator, teaching you and your partner active listening skills that convey empathy and respect. Most problems in a relationship stem from poor communication, and in therapy we will collaborate to discuss ways in which you and your partner can lovingly and honestly identify and express your personal feelings and needs with each other. I believe that current intensity and obstacles in close relationships can indicate unresolved pain and patterns from the past, and seeking insight from the past can help us heal, individually and relationally, in the present. No matter what issues you may face as a couple, God can heal past and current wounds, resolve conflicts and enable us to live out amazing dreams.

Premarital Counseling

The purpose of pre-marital counseling is to prepare a couple for marriage by helping partners gain an understanding of themselves, both individually and as a couple. In pre-marital counseling, we will discuss personality traits, family backgrounds, communication tools, and potentially areas for conflict, with the aim of deepening your intimacy in preparation for your life together. We will also discuss practical matters such as finances, sex, roles and responsibilities. Our sessions will be interactive and may include handouts, temperament assessment tools, questionnaires, role-play, and co-operative teaching.
